MCS-150 Biennial Update

Every 24 months (biennial), on a month + year fixed by your USDOT number. Filed with the FMCSA. Here is who it applies to, when it falls, and what a late filing actually costs.

Who has to file it

Every interstate motor carrier with an active USDOT number (and many intrastate carriers in states that require it).

When it's due

Your due date is not assigned at random and it is not our opinion — it is a pure function of your own USDOT number:

• The last digit sets the month.
• odd second-to-last digit → file in odd years; even → file in even years
• Filing is due on the last day of the assigned month.

Month, digit by digit:

• 1 → January
• 2 → February
• 3 → March
• 4 → April
• 5 → May
• 6 → June
• 7 → July
• 8 → August
• 9 → September
• 0 → October

What a late filing costs

Failure to update deactivates your USDOT number; civil penalties up to $10,000 (49 U.S.C. 521).
